make sure the paint is not a traditional white-wash.... when we cleaned the walls of our old dairy we found the paint had a high lime content that caused a great amount of irritation.
I think in the first instance the cleaning will not consist of much more than taking a broom and gathering all the cobwebs! That alone should work wonders...
